Margaret Dwyer Demo: Creating Natural Looking Textures In Watercolor

Margaret Dwyer Demo: Creating Natural Looking Textures In Watercolor

Join Margaret Dwyer for a watercolor demo in the Kittery Art Association gallery on Thursday, May 2nd from 5-7pm!

Watercolor is an amazing medium that employs many varied techniques. It is inherently transparent, and creates luminous, mysterious effects when layered. It is also very responsive to experimental ways of mark-making that complement more traditional methods. Creating natural looking textures in watercolor can enhance landscapes, seascapes, florals, abstracts, and more. Adding texture can transform the character of simple specimens from the natural world, such as rocks, shells, and leaves. Working on a large format, this demonstration will focus on the variety of visual textures inspired by nature. With a blend of specific techniques and informed color choices, I will demonstrate how a painting develops and is brought to life through the layering process. Many people have expressed the opinion that watercolor is a difficult medium to master. While it has its challenges, I believe it to be a very misunderstood medium. As a longtime teaching artist, I have learned that it is much more accessible than one might think. Simply knowing techniques is not enough. You must understand the timing of when they will work. Also, being willing to respond to your painting during the process rather than forcing it to conform to a preconceived outcome makes a big difference with watercolor. Andrew Wyeth said it best when he stated that watercolor combines “mad freedom with truth.” Being surprised by this magical medium and then bringing an image to completion with one’s own artistic voice is what makes working with watercolors so gratifying.

Admission: $20/person, please RSVP here and pay at the reception desk via cash/credit/check upon arrival for the demo.

Other teaching venues include museum programs, galleries, schools, art centers, and her own private studios. Her watercolors have been included in the “Splash-America’s Best Watercolors” series of fine art books published by North Light, and “How did you Paint That?”, by International Artist books. Her watercolors have been included in many national and international exhibitions. She holds an MFA and BFA in visual art. A committed studio artist, she is constantly exploring new themes with traditional and experimental techniques.

“I love being a studio artist, but I also have a real passion for teaching. I learn so much from others and being in a group dynamic. Opening the world of watercolor to people has been and continues to be a purposeful mission for me. Ideas and artistic methods are always in motion in my studio, and it is a joy to share that with others through teaching.”

Doris Rice Painting Adventure: Fundamentals of Plein Air (2 Day Workshop)

Doris Rice Painting Adventure: Fundamentals of Plein Air (Two Day Workshop)

Saturday, May 18th (9:30am-4:00pm) & Sunday, May 19th (9:00am-3:00pm).

Meet at The Kittery Art Association Art HUB (Lower Level Studio Space).

In this two-day plein air workshop, you will be introduced to a step-by-step painting process that will take you from selecting the subject as seen from your location, composing the scene in preliminary sketches, creating simplified shapes to capture ‘the place’ and then working the painting to a finish with carefully chosen details. We’ll talk about materials and techniques but the focus will be on the basics of painting: composition, value relationships, color contrasts, edge variety, and details. An emphasis will be placed on proper seeing, and on understanding and manipulating what is seen.

The day will open with a brief presentation of materials, use of the easel, planning compositional concepts, followed by a demo (about an hour). The participants will then paint for the remainder of the day with one-on-feedback, painting outdoors 10am - 2:00pm approximately. The workshop will end as we go inside for a review of concepts and a critique.

Subjects: Buildings, perspective on location, possibly a street garden or planter if there is spring material available. What will inspire your eye at this location?

David Lussier: Paint Alla Prima Plein Air with Confidence (Two Day Workshop)

Learn to paint Alla Prima with confidence. David Lussier joins us at the KAA for a two day alla prima plein air workshop on June 29th and 30th from 10am - 4pm. The term Alla Prima means 'At One Go'. In his remarkable treatise 'In Praise of Painterly Painters', the late artist, author and teacher, Charles Movalli wrote; painterly painters are surrounded by seeming contradictions. They finish by not finishing, include by leaving out, paint more by painting less. Their means are easy to see, the results, immediately felt. But how such seemingly insufficient means lead to these results is a mystery.

In this two day plein air workshop, we will explore this method of Alla Prima painting. Economy of stroke is within every painters grasp if they are willing to approach the painting process with a 'Less Is More' mind set. Our goal with each painting will be to see our subject as shapes of color and value and not as individual objects. When viewed in this way, we can look at our subject with a painters eye, react quickly and make confident marks on the canvas that are uniquely an expression of our individual selves.

There will be a daily demonstration with discussions on composition, design, edges, value and color. A thorough understanding of these concepts is key to giving our paintings the feeling of light and atmosphere. Beginners to experienced artist are welcome.

Meet at the Kittery Art Association Art HUB (Lower Level Studio Space).

Registration Fee: $295/person.

Caroline Kelley: Introduction To Soft Pastel Painting Workshop (Six Week Course)

Caroline Kelley: Introduction To Soft Pastel Painting (Six Week Course)
Wednesdays from 6pm - 8pm: July 10th through August 14th.
The Kittery Art Association Art HUB (Lower Level Studio Space).

Join artist Caroline Kelley for an introduction to soft pastel painting in the Kittery Art Association Art HUB. In this six-week course we'll play with fabulous color. We'll introduce you to artist quality materials and techniques that make pastel painting a versatile, accurate, portable, and fun medium to work with. As this is a beginner course, we will focus primarily on a variety of mark-making, layering color, and how to avoid common pitfalls in the process. We will also cover cleaning, storing, and displaying your pastels and finished paintings. This course will cover everything you need to get started. A materials list will be provided prior to the first class for those who wish to source their own materials. Material packs will be available from the instructor for $60 each at the first class.

Carrie Kelley is a pastel painter who focuses on New England landscape and architecture. She has earned a BFA in Painting and an MA in Arts Administration. She believes in unapologetically painting what inspires her as both a woman and an artist because that's where compelling art comes from - the individual artist's interests, emotional attachments, aversions, and influences. Her love of pastel painting comes from the medium's practicality, versatility, and richness. She sees teaching pastel painting as an opportunity to make friends with other artists (this means you!) and help them develop an understanding of their own artistic goals and how to reach them. You can see her work at www.cmjkelley.com.

Barry Tarr: I have been a photographer since I was twelve. In high school I met someone who became my photographic mentor, learning darkroom techniques as well as the art of photography. At the same time, I also had my first introduction to computer programming. The decision I faced was what direction to take in my career. I chose computers and went on to develop computer systems for over 40 years. I continue to be involved in photography and I am fortunate to see my two passions become one.

Holiday Concert Series: With Susie Burke, Kent Allyn & Steve Roy

Kittery Point UCC & The Kittery Art Association are thrilled to bring you a two night Holiday Concert Series featuring Susie Burke, Kent Allyn and Steve Roy

* Please Note * Advance Tickets are sold out online, however a limited number of tickets will be available in person at the door just prior to the event. In person ticket sales may be made via cash or check only.

Three of New England’s finest present an evening of holiday music and folk favorites, as longtime musical compatriots Susie Burke and Kent Allyn join with sideman extraordinaire Steve Roy to bring their popular Christmas concert to several venues throughout the Seacoast.

Over twenty years ago, singer and guitarist Susie Burke and her husband, guitarist, mandolinist and composer David Surette, began a series of annual holiday concerts with pianist, guitarist, and bassist Kent Allyn, and the shows soon became a beloved part of many people’s holiday tradition. David passed away in December 2021, leaving very large shoes to fill, and is deeply missed by so many. This year, Susie and Kent called on multi-instrumentalist Steve Roy, one of David’s great pals and very favorite musical collaborators, to join them for their 2023 holiday shows. The concerts will feature selections from Susie, David, and Kent’s holiday CD release "Wonderland," alongside a repertoire ranging from centuries-old traditional carols to unique takes on modern holiday classics. With influences and styles ranging from folk to jazz, Celtic to rock, blues to Broadway and beyond, this trio presents seasonal repertoire with heart, humor, flair, and energy!

Susie Burke is a singer, guitarist, educator and songwriter from southern Maine. Well-versed in a variety of contemporary and traditional folk styles, Susie is best known for her work in a duo with her husband, multi-instrumentalist and composer David Surette, with whom she recorded seven albums and performed for thirty-five years. Reviews in the Boston Globe have said of Burke’s singing, “her dark crystal voice is transporting”, and “her phrasing is unerringly devoted to the lyric”. Susie continues to perform and teach throughout New England and beyond, bringing a collaborative and joyful style to sharing music.

Kent Allyn is an in-demand accompanist and studio musician, as well as a key member of several groups, including Ben Baldwin & the Big Note, and the Renovators. His stellar bass, piano, and electric guitar work have been heard on numerous recordings, Susie and David’s among them.

Steve Roy is a multi-instrumentalist from Eliot, Maine who plays and teaches upright bass, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, and ukulele. Fluent in a vast array of musical styles from bluegrass to jazz to heavy metal, he has toured with many of the acoustic world’s top acts, and is well known locally for his work with numerous groups such as Old Hat Stringband, Jazzputin and the Jug Skunks, High Range, and Steve and Dave Play Dead, his Grateful Dead tribute duo with David Surette.

In addition to performing many concerts, David Surette taught countless students over the years with his warm and winsome style. This year’s concerts will feature a guest number performed by some of David’s students, several of whom are now teacher/performers themselves.

This year’s concerts will take place on December 15th & 16th at 7:00 PM at the Kittery Point UCC, 23 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point, 03905

Tickets: Advance Tickets are sold out online, however a limited number of tickets will be available in person at the door just prior to the event. In person ticket sales may be made via cash or check only.

It’s easy to make a dark color, like Ultramarine Blue, lighter by adding white, but how do you darken a light color like yellow? How do we warm up a color and how do we make a color cool? How do we keep our colors from getting chalky? … and much much more.

Attendees will follow along to learn techniques of color mixing, along with plenty of discussion and time for all your pressing questions. We promise that this will be a most informative workshop and you will walk away with a newfound confidence with mixing color. This workshop is like art school in a weekend.

Saturday and Sunday, November 18th & 19th from 10am - 4pm in the HUB, our new workshop space on the lower level at 2 Walker Street, Kittery, ME.

The Workshop Fee is $275 per person, and tickets must be purchased in advance here:

He is a painter in the purist sense of the word. In his poetic and intimate oil landscapes he strives to capture the essence and sense of place of his subject matter. He has been painting professionally for more than twenty five years, has garnered more than 75 prizes for his work and is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States. His work has been featured in many art journals and he is a professional member of some of the finest art associations and groups in the country. Works by Spotlight Artist Joyce Amend

Joyce Amend, BS, MA, CZT, York, ME lives on the beautiful Seacoast of Maine. She earned her BS degree at Cabrini University, PA; then studied art at Wesleyan University, CT, earning her MA degree in Visual Art. Before relocating to York, ME, she taught art in Connecticut schools and was the recipient of various grants awarded by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, The State of Connecticut and the Hartford Education Foundation. More recently, Amend was awarded a grant by the Maine Arts Commission that focused on her work with acrylic fluid art.

Amend enjoys painting in acrylic, watercolor and oil, is a Certified Zentangle Art Teacher, and teaches workshops in Mandala Dot Painting, Abstract Watercolor, Acrylic Fluid Art Painting and Zentangle Meditative Drawing at various recreational, community and health groups throughout Maine and New Hampshire. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Seacoast.

Artist Statement: In my everyday life, I am a planner and an organizer. By that I mean, I like to have all my ducks in a row, whether planning a vacation, scheduling daily tasks, organizing a class I’m teaching or coordinating family events. When it comes to creative artmaking, much of that organization goes out the window! Spontaneity enters my world in a wondrous way. But this has happened only since I embraced the world of abstract art.

Early on, my artwork focused on oil paintings that were detailed and quite realistic. My favorite theme then was re-creating beautiful snowcapped mountain ranges on canvas. Occasionally, I still find myself drawn to digging into my oils to paint those majestic forms of nature. I find this calming and exciting.

However, once I discovered Fluid Acrylic Painting, I was hooked! There is something magical about free-flowing, intuitive compositions that spontaneously evolve into beautiful abstract artworks. The unexpected merging of colors, and the compositional surprises are so exciting, where pigments dance across the canvas…somewhat controlled, but willfully intent as to where they want to go. And so, where artmaking is concerned, the organizational component of my being was set free!

When creating an abstract fluid artwork, I begin with a specific compatible color palette, fusing it as liquified colors. Using any of a variety of systematic methods, such as gravity, motion, and air, an explosion of colors results! I then manipulate the pigments until a pleasing and exciting composition appears, focusing on movement and design. Oftentimes hidden images appear; yet other times, the finished piece may bring about an emotion. Some of my artwork is layered with a glass-like resin that enhances and defines the overall beauty of the piece.

Living on the Maine Seacoast, it is easy to find creative inspiration when surrounded by the beauty and colors that nature provides for this region.

Student Testimonial:

"I took Amanda’s class “Advancing your Art Career” at the Mosaic Art Collective in Manchester this past April.

Amanda’s presentation included all aspects of the behind-the-scenes of an artist’s life from online presence, artist statements, CVs and Bios to application opportunities.

One can never take enough classes on how to be better at all the things and how to wear all the hats, but Amanda did such a great job, that I felt empowered to look further into new opportunities and in turn got two of my pieces into a museum show. A real first.

Thanks so much, Amanda for being a generous resource."

David Lussier: Alla Prima Painting Demo at The Kittery Art Association

David Lussier: Alla Prima Painting Demo at The Kittery Art Association

David Lussier joins us at The Kittery Art Association on Tuesday September 19th from 7-9 pm for a demonstration of Alla Prima Painting.

David will demonstrate the Alla Prima method and show how economy of stroke is within every painters grasp if they are willing to approach the painting process with a 'Less Is More' mind set. As he paints, David will explain how to look at the world as shapes of color and value and not as individual objects. He will talk about his palette which consists of 5 tubed colors and white and how he mixes his chromatic color harmony palette from these 5 colors and how he simplifies every aspect of the painting process in order to get at the essence of his subject.

Admission: $20/person, please pay at the door when you enter the gallery on the night of the demo.

Opening Reception: Sunday, August 13th from 5-7pm.

Also on View: Works by Spotlight Artist JoAnn Portalupi:

JoAnn Portalupi is a plein air and studio painter from Lee, Hew Hampshire working mainly in oils and predominantly in the tradition of observational painting. Her work has been exhibited in galleries along the NH and Maine Seacoast.

As a child she loved working with her hands and the notion you can make something out of anything — sticks, yarn, fabric, lengths of flat shiny gimp. She drew with chalk on pavement and painted on stones. For the first decades of adulthood her creative energy went into teaching, writing and raising children until a growing urge led her to pick up a paint brush.

Every painting is a practice in being deeply present to the object being studied and the elements of color, texture, shape and form being manipulated. That practice makes her feel alive and so she plans to keep on painting.

Details about the Exhibit:

Constant Companions: a Celebration of Trees.

As a plein air landscape painter I have always been drawn to the grandeur of trees. This exhibit brings together a collection of work where trees figure prominently. I invite viewers to pause and consider how fortunate we are to live among them.

Like us these silent sentients create their environment, and in turn are shaped by it.

Like us they grow and change through the seasons of the year and the seasons of a

lifetime.

Be still.

Observe.

They have much to teach us about our human condition.
