Reflections: All Member Exhibition

We are entering the golden hour of summer - the world around us is full bloom and changing light. We embrace the beauty of nature within and outside of ourselves. Join us for Reflections at The Kittery Art Association. Reflections runs from August 10th through September 3rd, with an Opening Reception on Sunday, August 13th from 5-7pm.

JoAnn Portalupi is a plein air and studio painter from Lee, Hew Hampshire working mainly in oils and predominantly in the tradition of observational painting. Her work has been exhibited in galleries along the NH and Maine Seacoast.

As a child she loved working with her hands and the notion you can make something out of anything — sticks, yarn, fabric, lengths of flat shiny gimp. She drew with chalk on pavement and painted on stones. For the first decades of adulthood her creative energy went into teaching, writing and raising children until a growing urge led her to pick up a paint brush.

Every painting is a practice in being deeply present to the object being studied and the elements of color, texture, shape and form being manipulated. That practice makes her feel alive and so she plans to keep on painting.

Constant Companions: a Celebration of Trees.

As a plein air landscape painter I have always been drawn to the grandeur of trees. This exhibit brings together a collection of work where trees figure prominently. I invite viewers to pause and consider how fortunate we are to live among them.

Like us these silent sentients create their environment, and in turn are shaped by it.

Like us they grow and change through the seasons of the year and the seasons of a

lifetime.

Be still.

Observe.

They have much to teach us about our human condition.
