“Beach Stone Series by Maryse Newton”
Shaped by the ocean, smoothed, sunned, old stones are wiser with every tide. In my series Beach Stones, I first paint layers of color washes and then script words that come to mind during daily meditation – those layers compose the painting’s understructure. From there I lay out my beach stones as I have seen on the rustic Maine shores, painting the sea as it ebbs and flows around them. Organic beach stone shapes reveal the painting’s layered base. The colors I choose are gathered from the sea during my day-to-day walks along the coast. The ocean provides my mind the joy of opening up, letting tension go, and refreshing my spirit. My intention is that these abstract works offer a peaceful joy that relaxes the soul wherever they are hung in the home. To create an interesting piece that is perfectly simple and simply perfect is my guiding foundation. Through word and image I hope I have accomplished that in this ongoing series, Beach Stones.
