The Seacoast Moderns

Vision Statement:

The Seacoast Moderns is a group of visual artists who work in a variety and range of media, styles, and genres that reflect and express our contemporary visions of the world.

Mission:

Members of The Seacoast Moderns support one another's creativity and artistic expressions.

We accomplish this mission in the following ways:
At regular meetings when we share our current work, ideas, and experiences; in group exhibits of our collective work; and when possible, by attending exhibits of the artistic endeavors of individual members.

The Seacoast Moderns - Our History

The Seacoast Moderns is a group of local artists started in 2010 by Berwick, Maine artist Ross Bachelder. The group was formed to encourage the artistic expression of those less traditional artists among the membership of the Kittery Art Association.

Members of The Seacoast Moderns include artists who have long practiced their art forms, artists who are relatively new to art-making, artists holding degrees in art, artists who are self-taught as well as those who are art educators. Our monthly meetings are informally structured. Members share responsibilities that ultimately prepare us for the exhibit of our work; a typical meeting can include some business to that end. In our meetings we have worked together to create vision and mission statements for the purpose of clearly defining who we are. In addition, meetings can include lively discussions about art, information about exhibit venues for artists, current exhibits in local galleries and museums, sharing of recent work by members and informal critiques of one another’s work. Members have also met at times outside of monthly meetings for the purpose of making art together.

The focus of The Seacoast Moderns is on art that is non-traditional. The artwork of our members is experimental in subject, form and medium, and reflects and expresses our contemporary visions of the world.
